Author's Note
The Forge of Ruin began as a question I could not put down: what does it cost a man to forge a thing that should not exist?
The answer the book gives is not redemptive. It is not even hopeful, in the way that word usually means. It is honest. The book lives in the lineage of the grimdark tradition — Cook, Abercrombie, Gemmell, the long Norse memory of saga where the world is hard, the choices are worse, and the dignity, when it appears, is paid for in blood. If you are looking for a softer story, this is not that one.
This book was co-authored with Logan. The character psychology, the plot architecture, the thematic design — these belong as much to him as to me. Two people kept the manuscript honest in places where one alone would have flinched. I will only say: the forty-seven names exist because we found them together.
The prose was drafted by Claude Opus 4.6 working under our creative direction, against a structural skeleton built scene by scene. Every chapter has been read by human eyes before it has been read by yours. Every choice — what to keep, what to cut, what to revise — was made by Logan and me. The cover was generated by Google's Nano Banana Pro to direction.
The percentages do not interest me. The decisions were ours.
The Forge of Ruin is rated mature for the reasons mature content earns its rating: violence, grief, the specific cruelty of a world that does not bend toward the people in it. We have written the violence as honestly as we know how to write it, which means without flourish, without fetish, and without apology. If it is hard to read in places, that is because it was hard to write in those places, and the hardness is the point.
The book is dedicated to anyone who has carried a name they did not choose, and refused to let the carrying make them less.
