The history
Avarra accepted the court’s revised nonlethal charter and has honoured it despite petitions to restore blood judgement. The older Warden cannot interpret every revision, so her fidelity to the terms is tested by the machinery beside her.
A presence in the world
Uses three substantial quartz blades whose paths remain visible. She redirects light within the court’s optical architecture; the blades retain weight, collision and recovery constraints.
Allegiance
Court of the Unbroken Light; proposed Celestial presider.
Rivalry
The Prism Warden sometimes marks a surrendered entrant as an unauthorised occupant. Avarra will interrupt her own advantage to uphold the stated charter, without automatically disabling a mechanism she cannot safely reach.
The first encounter
Three quartz blades descend separately to the court. Avarra follows at walking pace, reads the chosen terms aloud and leaves the first attack to the challenger.
Body and movement
3.2-metre adult female celestial duelist with mature angular face, deep-set dark eyes, severe smoke-grey silk and white mineral chest mantle; three substantial floating smoky-quartz blades, no crown or wings.
Natural mature skin, weighted silk, chipped translucent quartz, worn ivory stone.
Measured footwork assigns one blade to pressure, one to guard and one to recovery. A blade rotated edge-on briefly disappears against the light but its shadow and sound remain legible.
Encounter design
Win the declared passage trial by clean touches, boundary control or disarm; protect a surrendered entrant when the old protocol intervenes.
The arena
An open duel court with quartz fins, a marked boundary, two surrender recesses and rotating spectator shutters.
Phase 1
Three measures
- Trigger
- The challenger confirms the trial conditions.
- Action
- One blade advances, one guards her flank and one returns through a fixed recovery arc.
- Counterplay
- Track the returning blade rather than chasing the attacker; cross its completed arc to reach her open side.
Phase 2
Light divided
- Trigger
- The challenger scores two clean measures or controls the central mark.
- Action
- She rotates a blade into a visible light band before a long lateral sweep.
- Counterplay
- Read the blade’s bright edge and floor shadow, pass under the near end or move beyond the marked terminating fin.
Phase 3
Terms upheld
- Trigger
- The Warden flags a surrendering entrant.
- Action
- Avarra diverts a blade to protect the recess, leaving her own scoring defence incomplete.
- Counterplay
- Pause scoring to help contain the Warden, or finish the agreed measure without striking the protected entrant; the charter records the choice.
The cost of failure
Leaving the boundary concedes a measure. Attacking a surrender recess ends the trial and closes lawful passage until restitution is adjudicated.
What remains
A victory grants passage under stated terms, not ownership of the court or Avarra’s service. The charter discrepancy becomes a repair obligation shared by the two valleys.
