The history
Rhaum commanded a failed valley siege and now seeks a weapon that will remove his dependence on ordinary crews. His fear of another defeat drives calculated expendability, not a secret wish to be saved.
A presence in the world
Carries limited charged ammunition and needs prepared recoil notches. His harness distributes load but cannot let him fire the heavy cannon accurately while running.
Allegiance
Void Ascendants, high citadel artillery detachment.
Rivalry
The Sundered Engine denies his supply lift. He alternates attempts to capture it with volleys that further damage the mirror he hopes to command.
The first encounter
A cannon report arrives before the captain is visible. Stone chips fall from the only ramp wide enough for the waiting evacuation wagons.
Body and movement
Broad older human siege captain in a practical dark military coat, weathered metal shoulder brace, bare stern face, carrying a massive shoulder-mounted recoil-balanced arcane cannon supported by a belt harness; no full-body ornamental armour.
Worn steel, soot, stiff wool, leather harness, faint energy deep inside breech.
Moves slowly between pre-sighted buttresses, then locks the harness into a notch. A kneeling recoil stance and visible breech vent distinguish a full shot from a short suppressing discharge.
Encounter design
Break the artillery position and keep the civilian supply lift operational.
The arena
A zigzag ramp with four firing notches, destructible upper parapets and an ammunition lift on a visible cycle.
Phase 1
Range held
- Trigger
- The challenger leaves the cistern cover.
- Action
- He vents the breech, locks into a notch and fires a straight penetrating shot; the vent precedes the muzzle charge.
- Counterplay
- Move across the lane during venting and close under the notch’s minimum depression angle.
Phase 2
Ammunition denied
- Trigger
- The supply lift is stopped or two ammunition crates are seized.
- Action
- He uses short suppressing blasts and shoves with the barrel while moving towards his reserve.
- Counterplay
- Force movement between notches, attack the exposed harness buckle and keep the reserve physically separated.
Phase 3
Last charged round
- Trigger
- Only his visibly marked reserve round remains.
- Action
- He commits to a long charge aimed at the civilian lift brake.
- Counterplay
- Interrupt the planted stance, pull the lift behind the stone sill or redirect the shot by rotating the damaged recoil notch.
The cost of failure
The civilian lift brake breaks and the evacuation must use a slower route; surviving supplies determine how many loads can be recovered before night.
What remains
Seized artillery records expose the timing of Draeven’s blockade. Rhaum’s capture or death changes military intelligence, not the world’s metaphysical order.
