A burial avenue is being converted into a long-range weapon. Every chamber gives the invaders another resonator, and every occupied chamber contains witnesses whose evidence must survive the assault.
The avenue began as a refuge for migrants forbidden burial within the neighbouring city. Its bells were intended to carry names across the escarpment. A Void Ascendant cell seized the far chambers and converted remembrance into range-finding; the original name plates now survive only in the quieter annex.
Immense horizontal ceramic bells form a sequence of traversable burial chambers. Cedar braces, low side tunnels and textile baffles create distinct acoustic routes. A straight avenue promises speed but exposes the traveller to the entire bell line.
Listen to brace knocks and watch dust lift before crossing exposed intervals. Move felt baffles to shorten dangerous acoustic paths; their weight leaves hands occupied. Breaking a bell creates a shortcut but permanently destroys its inscriptions, while releasing braces lowers it intact and blocks the avenue.
Migrants said a name spoken into a burial bell would find a listener beyond the escarpment.
The city’s former magistrates dismissed the avenue as a burial ground without legitimate witnesses.
Letters and household records survive alongside prestigious names; brace paths explain which sounds travel.
A few names occur in several incompatible family accounts. Their relationships remain an archival question.
