The history
Its defence programme predates the court’s latest surrender charter. Previous presiders added manual pauses instead of replacing its core measure, leaving a documented conflict between law and machinery.
A presence in the world
Requires incident light and clear quartz paths. Mineral inclusions scatter energy, so each active beam has a visible source and ending; occlusion works physically.
Allegiance
Court of the Unbroken Light; bounded Forged apparatus.
Rivalry
Avarra’s commitment to the revised charter interrupts its original programme. It treats her protective blade as an obstruction to route around, not as a divine enemy.
The first encounter
A single ray enters an empty court. The sentinel turns once, and two narrow lines of light stop precisely at the feet of a surrendered petitioner.
Body and movement
Tall narrow four-legged crystalline sentinel with a single vertical rotating prism torso, tapered stone footings and two long horizontal glass vanes; no face, bodybuilder torso or angel wings.
Clear thick optical crystal, mineral inclusions, worn dark stone joints.
Four tapered feet reposition around a rotating prism. Horizontal vanes align before a split beam; thick crystal limits the speed of a complete reversal.
Encounter design
Place the sentinel into a verifiable maintenance hold and prevent it firing into a surrender recess.
The arena
The trial court’s side lane, with three shutters, two ground sockets and one accessible mechanical pause linkage.
Phase 1
Measure occupied
- Trigger
- An entrant remains in a surrender recess after the old countdown.
- Action
- The prism aligns, then divides one ray into two marked firing lanes.
- Counterplay
- Move a shutter to occlude the source and approach from the unlit side while the vanes remain aligned.
Phase 2
Route around
- Trigger
- The first firing path is blocked.
- Action
- It steps to a second socket and sweeps a glass vane through the maintenance lane.
- Counterplay
- Watch the lifting foot, leave the vane’s horizontal plane and pin the vacated socket before it can return.
Phase 3
Maintenance hold
- Trigger
- Both operating sockets are pinned.
- Action
- The prism slows but attempts one final alignment using diffuse storm light.
- Counterplay
- Close the remaining shutter and pull the mechanical pause linkage; verify that the vanes settle before entering the recess.
The cost of failure
A failed hold injures the protected petitioner and invalidates the active trial. Avarra survives as an independent witness who will report exactly what occurred.
What remains
The apparatus remains paused until its rule set is reconciled with the charter. Restarting it without that change is explicitly not a successful restoration.
