The history
The living seam arose in altered crater soil and was later cultivated by researchers. The current organism exceeds their records. Its exact emergence remains a local research question, not a replacement for Arcanea’s creation history.
A presence in the world
Transports mineral-rich water through root channels and sheds stone leaves that shelter smaller organisms. Its movement opens sinkholes while closing older ones; stability is dynamic, not a frozen ideal.
Allegiance
Unaffiliated proposed harmonic mutation; no divine identity.
Rivalry
Small Khaross colonies prune blocked channels; the present infestation strips live conduits faster than the Monarch can reroute them. Attacking all parasites indiscriminately can also block drainage.
The first encounter
The causeway descends without breaking. Across the crater, a root rises from beneath a laboratory and lifts a terrace into the sunlight.
Body and movement
Huge plant-mineral organism with a hollow cylindrical trunk torso and four thick root legs, a low asymmetric crown of broad stone leaves, no face or deer antlers; luminous jade channels only where bark has split.
Rough bark, malachite-like living crystal, wet soil, stone leaf surfaces.
Root legs lift one at a time, leaving three supports. A brightening seam precedes a mineral extrusion; a dimming seam precedes subsidence.

Stabilise an extraction route and reduce the destructive infestation without severing the living water network.
The arena
Four terraced levels linked by causeways, active root conduits and visible breathing sinkholes.
Phase 1
Displaced terrace
- Trigger
- The extraction crew cuts a living conduit.
- Action
- The Monarch lifts a root and the connected terrace begins to sink; light drains from the exposed seam first.
- Counterplay
- Leave the dimming route, move onto an independent stone footing and close the extraction valve.
Phase 2
Crystal defence
- Trigger
- Live roots are repeatedly damaged or the parasite enters a main channel.
- Action
- A seam brightens before blunt mineral leaves extrude across a chosen route.
- Counterplay
- Read the bright channel, move across rather than along it and use dead mineral cover while clearing the parasite from the junction.
Phase 3
New circulation
- Trigger
- Two main channels are cleared and extraction stops.
- Action
- Water returns along an altered route, lifting one terrace and draining another.
- Counterplay
- Reposition the transport line to the new stable causeway and allow the root leg to settle before loading it.
The cost of failure
Severing the main network drains the wet terraces and collapses the high-yield route. Killing the Monarch provides immediate ore at a lasting ecological and settlement cost.
What remains
A stabilised crater supports limited dry-seam work and repeated observation. The creature stays wild and its growth continues beyond the expedition’s needs.
