The history
Old restraint scars suggest a failed hauling programme recorded in monastery fragments. This history explains human caution but does not make the animal a moral victim who must forgive anyone.
A presence in the world
Uses a warm channel for winter shelter and hunts fish concentrated beneath thinning ice. Its forelimbs deliver weight-driven blows; its short hindquarters make steep retreat slower than a forward lunge.
Allegiance
Unaffiliated mountain fauna.
Rivalry
Kethrane’s warming route attracts it to the seed bridge. She can keep it away with noise only by risking the fragile vault floor.
The first encounter
Fish scatter under a clear floor panel. A dark nose presses through the ice, followed by a forepaw wider than a person’s chest.
Body and movement
Enormous pale mountain ursid with elongated powerful forequarters, short heavy hindquarters, narrow small-eyed head, ice-caked dark nose, long frost-matted guard hair and old iron restraint scars; no crown or jewellery.
Coarse damp ivory fur, ice crystals, dark skin and breath vapour.
Shoulders rise before a forepaw slam, then body weight shifts across the ice. A low head and compressed hindquarters announce the shorter but faster lunge.
Encounter design
Redirect Hroven towards an unoccupied warm outlet or defeat it while preserving the controlled seed-warming route.
The arena
An ice nave with timber load mats, a visible thaw channel and two manually divertible warm outlets.
Phase 1
Claimed warmth
- Trigger
- The party enters the occupied channel span.
- Action
- It strikes the floor with a raised forepaw, sending visible whitening cracks towards the nearest heavy footing.
- Counterplay
- Spread weight, move onto a timber mat and avoid the widening fracture rather than only the paw.
Phase 2
Broken surface
- Trigger
- Two ice panels fail or a warm outlet is changed.
- Action
- It lunges between exposed water edges and uses the current to climb back onto ice.
- Counterplay
- Read its compressed hindquarters, sidestep onto anchored timber and open the unoccupied outlet during the climb.
Phase 3
New shelter
- Trigger
- The alternate outlet warms sufficiently.
- Action
- It follows fish into the new channel, stopping to test any pursuit behind it.
- Counterplay
- Keep the bridge quiet and withdraw along the marked timber route; continued attacks convert the retreat into a final defensive fight.
The cost of failure
Heavy impacts collapse the warming antechamber, reducing the viable seed stock and forcing an immediate evacuation.
What remains
A redirected animal occupies a separated outlet. The monastery can retain a limited cold store, with a documented closure zone rather than a tame guardian.
