dungeon / What survives the thaw / Worldbuilding concept
A glacier has exposed a monastery’s seed vault just as its ice foundation starts to move. Two expeditions disagree over custody; a mountain predator has already claimed the warm evacuation channel.
The monastery stored mountain crops through a run of severe winters, then emptied when the trade route moved. Its builders used the glacier as a cold store without anticipating the present thaw. Kethrane’s expedition reached the seeds first and has already lost people establishing a controlled warming route.
Dark timber ribs hold a quarried ice interior above a thaw stream. Trapped air bands expose stresses in the floor; daylight from the far crevasse establishes direction. Weight, temperature and sound change which crossings remain usable.
Read ice whitening, spread weight over timber mats and divert thaw water without flooding the seed antechamber. Safe extraction takes time and cooperation; a fast retreat preserves lives but forfeits part of the viable stock. The central route remains traversable after Hroven is redirected.
The monastery’s old harvest rite called a seed jar a small summer promised to someone unborn.
A later sponsor’s charter treated each jar as the founder’s property held through winter.
Viability tests and warming records establish what can still grow; custody remains a human agreement.
The founder’s intended ownership terms survive in conflicting copies and are not settled by the predator encounter.
