The history
Ithraden survived the foundry evacuation and later sold its bypass plans to the occupiers. His exile is a local sentence for that betrayal; no hidden divine pedigree excuses it.
A presence in the world
Needs cooling water, replaceable arm liners and ore shipments. Disabling supply makes him less mobile between heat lanes but never magically deletes his combat skill.
Allegiance
Void Ascendants, furnace occupation detachment.
Rivalry
He keeps Vorrak agitated as an unwitting perimeter defence, yet fears the animal will break the shutter ring he needs.
The first encounter
Behind a furnace wheel, an ordinary human hand wipes soot from a sight slit. The shutter opens, and he advances inside the only band of air cool enough to breathe.
Body and movement
Lean mature male human duelist with close-cropped grey hair, severe visible face, one forged right forearm ending in a broad functional heat shield, long ordinary left-hand blade, soot-worn leather and asymmetric heatproof cloth.
Oxidized iron, heat-bleached leather, thick woven cloth, living human skin.
Short diagonal steps keep his shield facing heat. His blade controls one narrow lane while the forged forearm braces a shutter; he cannot defend both sides while operating it.
Encounter design
Stop the siege-alloy shipment and seize or disable the furnace controls.
The arena
Four radial heat lanes separated by masonry wedges; the bypass handwheel sits opposite his initial position.
Phase 1
Operating distance
- Trigger
- The challenger enters the control ring.
- Action
- A three-blow blade sequence ends with a shield shove towards a shutter; a visible handwheel movement precedes each heat lane.
- Counterplay
- Dodge across his blade side after the second blow, then punish the planted shield without entering the announced lane.
Phase 2
Bleed pressure
- Trigger
- The bypass reduces furnace pressure.
- Action
- He removes an overheated liner and uses it as a short-lived burning barrier, making the shield arm slower until recooled.
- Counterplay
- Let the liner fall, circle through the cooled wedge and interrupt his approach to the water trough.
Phase 3
Last shipment
- Trigger
- The lift is seized or the shipment brake is cut.
- Action
- He abandons static control and pursues the lift with direct sword attacks.
- Counterplay
- Use the exposed lift brake to choose the final fighting level; defeat, capture or force him away before the load departs.
The cost of failure
The shipment escapes on a visible lift countdown, supplying Rhaum’s later position. The party can survive and continue with that harder strategic state.
What remains
A captured Ithraden is a prisoner with useful knowledge, not automatically redeemed. The furnace can reopen at reduced output under the workers’ own terms.
