dungeon / What the mountain kept / Worldbuilding concept
An abandoned furnace can replace a ruined harbour’s winter anchors. Its last operator and the animal nesting below it both intend to keep the heat.
The first breach was industrial: workers cut a cooling bore into a living fault and mistook the pressure release for an inexhaustible source. Subsequent military contracts deepened the bore. The evacuation left a furnace that still consumes its own foundations; recent Void Ascendant occupation has accelerated the damage.
A cylindrical excavation establishes three legible strata: dry ore galleries, a furnace ring and cooling trenches. A broken hanging elevator joins them only when the counterweight crosses an exposed shaft. Heat lanes remain visible through smoke and mineral colour changes.
Read soot shadows to time furnace shutters, transfer the elevator counterweight and descend by maintenance chains. The reduced-output bypass supports a slower, safer extraction; full output produces more anchors but destroys the lower nursery and makes Vorrak permanently hostile.
Workers say the first furnace fire was borrowed from the mountain and must be returned at winter’s end.
The occupation calls the same fire a right earned by conquest.
Furnace slag predates the military contracts; the cooling breach is measurable.
Whether the borrowing tale predates the first foundry or arose after its accidents is not settled.
