The history
Kethrane’s crew discovered the viable stock and spent weeks warming it. Their sponsor claims exclusive custody; she doubts that claim but will not abandon the people who made extraction possible.
A presence in the world
A human fighter constrained by footing, breath and the need to keep the seed bridge intact. Training enables deliberate control, not immunity to cold or steel.
Allegiance
Independent White Vigil expedition; Academy-trained mortal.
Rivalry
Hroven occupies the channel her crew needs. She can repel it but cannot both fight on the ice and regulate the vault temperature.
The first encounter
Beyond the thaw water, a woman scrapes ice from the edge of her blade and tells the approaching party exactly how many people are still behind her.
Body and movement
Mature human warrior woman with shaved dark hair, damaged pale lamellar armour over heavy grey wool, exposed serious face, long two-handed straight blade with an ordinary dark hilt; one asymmetric ice-crusted shoulder cloak.
Scratched steel, felted wool, frost, human weathered skin.
Low lateral guards become sliding countersteps on prepared frost. Her leading heel sets before a committed cut; on bare timber she loses the long glide but gains a faster stop.
Encounter design
Earn shared custody by a controlled duel or agreement while keeping both expedition crews and the viable stock safe.
The arena
A narrow bridge with two timber passing platforms, a marked surrender recess and a fragile warming chamber below.
Phase 1
The bridge is held
- Trigger
- An armed challenger crosses the agreed mark.
- Action
- She makes two measured lateral cuts, then a sliding counterstep that punishes an immediate chase.
- Counterplay
- Watch the leading heel, wait for the glide to end and use the passing platform to change the angle.
Phase 2
Ground changed
- Trigger
- A timber mat is placed or ice is broken.
- Action
- She shortens her stance and switches to close binds and shoulder checks.
- Counterplay
- Use blade control and a clean disarm; do not retreat through the warming controls with a weapon raised.
Phase 3
Custody decision
- Trigger
- A clean disarm, agreed touch score or mutual withdrawal occurs.
- Action
- She lowers the point but keeps her crew’s exit open while terms are stated.
- Counterplay
- Honor the surrender recess and commit to a verifiable division of transport, seed stock and labour.
The cost of failure
A strike into the warming machinery kills part of the stock and ends the controlled duel. Losing fairly costs priority and transport capacity rather than life.
What remains
Kethrane can become a recurring equal whose support depends on honoured agreements. She retains her crew and the right to refuse later requests.
