The history
Mordren accepted Shadow corruption to win duels he could otherwise lose, then committed himself to the blockade’s exterior operation. This proposal does not establish a new primordial, replace Malachar or extend the sealed antagonist’s reach.
A presence in the world
The reflection feint requires a calm connected surface of water within the ravine. Disturbed or obscured water breaks its visual alignment; the real blade remains the source of physical injury.
Allegiance
Voidtouched duelist attached to the exterior Void Ascendant operation.
Rivalry
The Sable Testament’s falling weights disturb the reflective water and interrupt his best feint. He protects its anchors despite that disadvantage because completing the interdiction matters more to him than a beautiful duel.
The first encounter
A plain blade is drawn halfway above the severed causeway. In the water below, its reflection appears fully extended before the hand moves again.
Body and movement
Adult androgynous human swordmaster with severe weathered face and close-cropped white hair, plain black layered warcloth, one unadorned long narrow blade and a broken dark stone scabbard, visible Shadow veins restrained to left hand.
Matte warcloth, worn steel, black stone, human skin and restrained Shadow absorption.
A narrow side-on stance conceals the draw length. The stone scabbard turns before each committed cut; half-draws can become short thrusts but cannot instantly become full sweeps without another shoulder rotation.
Encounter design
Break the duelist’s defence of the outer anchors and keep the convoy crossing open.
The arena
A severed causeway over calm black water, two low silt-release sluices and three dry stone islands within the exterior route.
Phase 1
Half a blade
- Trigger
- The challenger reaches the first defended anchor.
- Action
- A half-draw threatens a thrust while the reflected image suggests a wider cut.
- Counterplay
- Track the real scabbard and shoulder, hold outside thrust range and punish the full draw’s committed recovery.
Phase 2
Water broken
- Trigger
- A siege weight falls or a silt sluice opens.
- Action
- The reflection feint fails; Mordren shifts to fast direct combinations and a scabbard check.
- Counterplay
- Keep the water disturbed, read the three-beat footwork and counter after the scabbard hand crosses his body.
Phase 3
Anchor abandoned
- Trigger
- The last convoy line reaches safety or the working is isolated.
- Action
- He leaves the anchor to pursue the bearer of the recovered operation record.
- Counterplay
- Choose the dry island for the final duel, protect the record carrier and defeat, capture or force him off the exterior road.
The cost of failure
An exposed record carrier can be wounded and the operation evidence lost while the convoy still survives. Pursuit never opens a route to the canonical prison.
What remains
His defeat ends this exterior protection detail. Surviving corruption is contained locally; no final line claims Shadow itself has ended.
