The history
The old aqueduct offers reliable drumming surfaces above a flooded ravine. Survey traffic has concentrated during its breeding season, creating a conflict that did not exist at lower footfall.
A presence in the world
Territorial near its molting shelf and clutch. Four locomotor legs carry the thorax; two raised blade forelimbs hook prey and terrain. It senses transmitted vibration better than motion through open air.
Allegiance
Unaffiliated forest arthropod.
Rivalry
Serevra uses its territorial boundaries to protect her platform, but refuses to destroy its clutch because doing so would drive it through both expeditions’ camps.
The first encounter
A blade limb hooks over an aqueduct edge. Roots snap one at a time as the narrow thorax rises into the morning light.
Body and movement
Massive six-legged forest arthropod with a low forward-armoured head, tall segmented thorax and two long folded blade forelimbs held above four locomotor legs; thornlike growth only along chitin joints, no mammal eyes.
Matte dark olive chitin, reddish joint membranes, wet moss caught in grooves.
Stops completely before a two-stage hook and pull. After climbing, its rear legs must find purchase before the blade limbs can strike again.
Encounter design
Open a supply crossing by rerouting vibration or defeating the animal; keep the nesting shelf separate from the crossing objective.
The arena
Two aqueduct spans, a hanging root bridge and a white watch pier, with water sluices that can mask or redirect sound.
Phase 1
Claimed span
- Trigger
- A heavy footstep reaches its nearest pier.
- Action
- It hooks the span, then pulls its head into a forward snapping strike; the hook remains visible before the pull.
- Counterplay
- Leave the hooked edge, cross behind its raised limb and attack only during the rear-leg purchase pause.
Phase 2
High approach
- Trigger
- The direct span is flooded or its first perch fails.
- Action
- It climbs through roots and drops a blade across the next landing.
- Counterplay
- Watch root tension and falling moss; stay on an unconnected rope line or move to a pier outside that root network.
Phase 3
Crossing window
- Trigger
- The old water channel is reopened.
- Action
- Water masks the supply party while Orryx turns towards a prepared drumming lure.
- Counterplay
- Stop using the resonant stone route and escort the convoy across the quieter root bridge before the lure breaks.
The cost of failure
A severed root bridge isolates supplies. Killing the clutch makes Orryx abandon predictable defence for a pursuit through the camps.
What remains
The reopened channel supports future seasonal crossings; the field guide records a closure during the next molt instead of declaring the forest conquered.
