The history
Serath occupied the gulf after the reef matured. The garrison standard now starves the feeding corridor, pushing it into shallower passages where divers work.
A presence in the world
Feeds on dense schools concentrated by reef flow. Cartilage and four fin pairs support slow station-keeping and abrupt lateral turns; it cannot follow divers through narrow stone passages.
Allegiance
Unaffiliated pelagic fauna.
Rivalry
Morvane’s standard constricts its food supply. Serath attacks the standard’s moving cloth during current reversals and can accidentally break cover the divers depend on.
The first encounter
A school of fish compresses into a silver wall. That wall parts along a curved seam, revealing nacre ribs beneath the passing hunter.
Body and movement
Thirty-metre pelagic predator with a narrow sculpted head, broad ventral mouth and eight long ribbon fins arranged in four pairs; translucent nacre cartilage visible through thick blue-green skin; no humanoid eyes or dragon horns.
Wet living skin, nacre cartilage, restrained violet sensory pores and clear trailing membrane edges.
Broad turns originate in the second fin pair. A folded ventral mouth signals a pass; a widening mouth and inward curl of the rear fins signal a suction strike.
Encounter design
Reopen the feeding current and survive the hunter’s territorial passes; killing remains possible at major cost to the reef system.
The arena
A central gulf bordered by three air bells and stone channels too narrow for its body, with a sediment-choked living inlet valve.
Phase 1
Closed current
- Trigger
- Divers enter the gulf while the inlet is blocked.
- Action
- Serath circles once, then draws loose debris towards its opening mouth.
- Counterplay
- Anchor behind a stone rib when debris starts moving; cross after the mouth closes and the tail clears.
Phase 2
Turn of water
- Trigger
- The first sediment obstruction is cleared.
- Action
- The changed current pulls Serath laterally; its inner fins rake the near wall while the opposite flank opens.
- Counterplay
- Read which fin pair flares, use the outer current and work the next obstruction during its wide recovery turn.
Phase 3
Feeding passage
- Trigger
- The inlet is fully restored.
- Action
- A shoal enters and Serath commits to a long upstream feeding run.
- Counterplay
- Clear the gulf and remove hanging lines from its route; follow in its wake only after displaced debris settles.
The cost of failure
An unanchored diver is swept to the lower recovery pocket with damaged air gear. Continued obstruction drives the hunter into the shallow route, closing a return path.
What remains
A living Serath becomes a known seasonal hazard, not a mount. Successful divers chart its feeding interval for later civilian passage.
