The history
Serevra lost her original route to a ravine collapse, rebuilt the aqueduct approach and rescued two stranded surveyors. Her contract now gives her crew a legitimate access claim contested by the Meridian Survey.
A presence in the world
Needs dry bowstrings, recovered arrows and concealed rope exits. Wind and water affect her range; neither pale camouflage nor Gate training makes her invisible.
Allegiance
Independent Pale Line expedition; proposed Gate-Touched mortal.
Rivalry
She understands Orryx’s nesting radius but cannot command it. Using the animal as a weapon risks the rescue route that gives her claim its moral and contractual weight.
The first encounter
An arrow cuts the loose end of a rope beside your hand. She stands on the distant white pier, gives her name and states the boundary once.
Body and movement
Adult human woman ranger with weathered brown skin, tightly bound black braids, pale ash camouflage cloak cut short at bow arm, long asymmetric recurved bow and simple bone range markers; believable athletic proportions.
Tough barkcloth, hide, dark wood, worn steel, rain on skin.
A single planted draw alternates with rapid lateral relocation along prepared ropes. Her release shoulder and bow cant disclose whether the next shot pins cover or targets movement.
Encounter design
Win passage through a declared contest, negotiate shared access or survive a hostile crossing; surrender remains a valid outcome.
The arena
Three sighted piers and two rope exits with a clearly marked noncombat shelter for both crews.
Phase 1
Declared measure
- Trigger
- A challenger accepts the crossing contest or breaches the boundary.
- Action
- She fires a visible ranging arrow, then attempts a pinning shot at the route it marks.
- Counterplay
- Change routes after the ranging shot, use stone cover and close only when her bow arm is extended.
Phase 2
Broken sightline
- Trigger
- The challenger reaches the second pier.
- Action
- She releases a prepared rope and descends to a lower firing shelf.
- Counterplay
- Watch the escape knot move; secure the upper rope or use water spray to reveal the new angle.
Phase 3
Within reach
- Trigger
- The challenger reaches her platform or meets the agreed score.
- Action
- She transitions to short bow strikes and a draw held at close range, then acknowledges a clean disarm or boundary loss.
- Counterplay
- Do not attack the noncombat shelter; use a controlled disarm, accept mutual withdrawal or state the negotiated claim.
The cost of failure
Harming the shelter ends the legitimate contest and turns both crews against the challenger. Losing the contest costs access time rather than a mandatory death.
What remains
A fair resolution makes Serevra a recurring competitor who can cooperate without becoming subordinate. A violent seizure creates a durable human rivalry.
