The history
The animal used tidal caves before the arsenal expanded. Heavy pile-driving and suspended hollow hulls now concentrate its feeding attempts beneath occupied docks.
A presence in the world
Locates prey and hollow shelter through low waterborne vibration. Its broad claw lifts and crushes; its smaller claw blocks openings and handles prey. It cannot pursue a party up a dry cliff.
Allegiance
Unaffiliated marine crustacean.
Rivalry
Draeven’s alarm system repeatedly lures it into the launch basin. It threatens his fleet more than his own fighters because the flagship’s keel produces the strongest resonance.
The first encounter
A ship keel rises against its hanging chains. Beneath it, a claw larger than the launch gate closes slowly around the timber.
Body and movement
Massive low flat marine crustacean with two unequal broad crushing claws, six walking legs, tiny protected stalk eyes and a thick ridged shell shaped to wedge beneath hulls; no smiling crab face.
Dark blue-black weathered shell, pale scrape marks, barnacles, streaming water.
Low lateral scuttles fit beneath keels. Before a major lift, six legs spread and the broad claw seats beneath the load, creating an unmistakable commitment.
Encounter design
Open an unoccupied tidal exit and remove the feeding alarm, or defeat the predator without collapsing the evacuation gantries.
The arena
A flooded dock beneath the launch deck, with stone caissons, hanging hulls and two tide-controlled exits.
Phase 1
Hollow timber
- Trigger
- Hammering or an alarm vibrates through a hull.
- Action
- It seats the broad claw beneath the resonant load, then lifts while the small claw blocks the nearest ladder.
- Counterplay
- Leave the load’s vertical shadow, use the stone caisson ladder and disable the alarm during the wide-leg lift.
Phase 2
Dock trapped
- Trigger
- The first sea gate is opened.
- Action
- The tide turns it sideways and it sweeps the smaller claw across the lower catwalk.
- Counterplay
- Read the current through floating debris, climb above the sweep and clear the second gate’s jam from the dry mechanism.
Phase 3
Open tide
- Trigger
- Both the quiet exit and the alarm shutdown are complete.
- Action
- It follows the current into the outer cave, stopping when a hollow hull vibrates behind it.
- Counterplay
- Keep evacuation work quiet until the shell clears; secure loose timbers before restarting capstans.
The cost of failure
A falling keel destroys a gantry and closes one evacuation lane. Continued alarm use drives the animal back into the inhabited basin.
What remains
The harbour resumes with quiet work intervals and a protected outer tide route. The predator remains a serious operational hazard rather than a domesticated trophy.
