The Lacuna Stair

Surveyors disappear inside a stair that returns along its own ceiling. Their possessions emerge in the rain outside, rearranged by a rule that a patient observer can learn.

The history

Road crews uncovered the chamber while seeking a winter tunnel. Three incompatible survey diagrams describe locally repeatable observations. This proposal leaves the chamber’s maker and ultimate cause unresolved; its behaviours are experimental rules bounded to the site, not a revision of Arcanea’s cosmology.

The architecture

The spatial anomaly is confined to one black-stone chamber. A stair descends from the ordinary entrance and returns across the ceiling; marked landings form a small stable graph rather than unlimited random geometry. The mountain doorway remains an external reference.

Finding a passage

Use a physical tether and numbered landing tokens to maintain orientation. Observe one complete reconfiguration before moving heavy loads. An external rope anchor establishes the escape route; falling returns the traveller to the last landing with lost time and damaged equipment, never an unexplained instant death.

Those who live here

Ordinary cave insects gather at the doorway and avoid the ceiling return.
A surviving surveyor maintains a chalk inventory at the third landing.
The Unfaced Pilgrim crosses marked steps; Ultharen changes the connections between them.

What the place conceals

Fresh chalk appears only on physically visited landings.
Every missing surveyor’s cord terminates at the same blocked junction.
An old tool cache predates the present stair configuration without explaining its maker.

One road crew says the stair is a traveller’s debt: every step taken must be returned.

Another insists the chamber simply refuses to accept a straight line drawn badly.
