The history
Three survey parties recorded the figure with different clothing details but the same displaced step. The collection preserves those reports as disputed observations rather than an omniscient origin story.
A presence in the world
Exists only inside the Lacuna chamber and responds to occupied stair positions. It does not hunt beyond the doorway or turn ordinary darkness into evil.
Allegiance
Unaffiliated bounded spatial manifestation; ontology unresolved.
Rivalry
Ultharen closes routes the Pilgrim has just crossed. Whether this is cooperation, maintenance or coincidental rule interaction remains unresolved; the observable timing is consistent.
The first encounter
A wet footprint appears on a dry ceiling stair. Below it, a tall cloth-folded figure descends into the place your next step would occupy.
Body and movement
Very tall lean figure whose head is a folded hollow of matte ivory cloth rather than a face; long jointed hands visible, feet ordinary and grounded, severe charcoal travel layers, one plain stone staff.
Matte cloth, dry stone, weathered bare hands; no black smoke cloud.
Moves at walking speed on marked steps. Its ceiling shadow commits one step ahead; it cannot change that announced destination during the same footfall.
Encounter design
Recover the missing surveyor’s tether and establish a traversable return without assuming the manifestation must die.
The arena
Five marked landings in one chamber, an ordinary doorway and a ceiling return visible from the central landing.
Phase 1
One step early
- Trigger
- The entrant occupies the second marked landing.
- Action
- The ceiling shadow selects a destination; the figure then reaches across the corresponding real step.
- Counterplay
- Read the shadow’s foot before moving and choose the unoccupied adjacent landing.
Phase 2
Crossed route
- Trigger
- A tether is attached to the blocked junction.
- Action
- The figure follows the tether’s sequence in reverse, closing distance on anyone who repeats their own path.
- Counterplay
- Use an unused side step, maintain the external anchor and let the announced route complete before doubling back.
Phase 3
Ordinary rain
- Trigger
- The blocked tether is returned to the entrance line.
- Action
- It walks to the threshold and stops with one foot inside the chamber.
- Counterplay
- Carry the recovered surveyor out while preserving the external anchor; attacking at the threshold restarts its local sequence.
The cost of failure
A misread step returns the entrant to the previous landing and abrades the tether. Exhausting the tether leaves a harder recovery route, not an arbitrary cosmological punishment.
What remains
The Pilgrim remains an observable unresolved presence. A successful chart records reliable behaviours and explicitly omits a claimed true origin.
