The history
The cooling breach opened a warm nursery basin. Evacuated workers once diverted their hammer shifts away from it; Ithraden has deliberately restarted the loudest presses to drive Vorrak towards intruders.
A presence in the world
Consumes mineral grazers and iron-rich deposits around stable heat. Its six legs distribute weight on fractured crust; the forelimbs excavate while the middle pair brace. It follows sustained ground vibration, not supernatural knowledge of the player.
Allegiance
Unaffiliated fauna; expedition name recorded by the Cinder Mutual.
Rivalry
Ithraden steals the heat Vorrak needs and exploits its territorial charges. Open shutters expose the duelist but provoke the animal; rerouting the bypass separates their incentives.
The first encounter
A whole slab of the trench floor rises. The grinder jaw emerges first, pushing a dead press aside before the six legs unfold beneath it.
Body and movement
Huge six-legged basalt-skinned burrowing predator; broad wedge skull; interlocking mineral grinding lower-jaw plates; load-bearing keratin shoulder ridge; tiny recessed eyes.
Rough living skin, iron-rich keratin, old pale pressure scars, dull heat inside the jaw only.
Slow lateral weight transfer precedes a committed forward shove. It can pivot only after lifting a middle brace leg, exposing a narrow safe crossing behind the shoulder.
Encounter design
Transfer the excavation route out of the nursery; drive Vorrak back or kill it, with visibly different ecological consequences.
The arena
An annular trench with four solid basalt islands, weak crust between them and a controllable cooling bypass.
Phase 1
Sounding
- Trigger
- First sustained vibration inside its nesting radius.
- Action
- It drums with a front leg; pebbles jump in the lane of an incoming jaw shove.
- Counterplay
- Leave the aligned lane and cross behind the shoulder during the middle-leg reset.
Phase 2
Hot ground
- Trigger
- The bypass is opened or two nursery barriers are destroyed.
- Action
- It vents hot breath into a trench, then forces rubble into the resulting steam corridor.
- Counterplay
- Read the jaw’s dull internal heat, climb a solid island and reopen a clear return lane before steam builds.
Phase 3
Return path
- Trigger
- A quiet warm route to the nursery is restored.
- Action
- It tests the route with alternating forefeet, then retreats unless attacked or followed.
- Counterplay
- Stop heavy movement, withdraw from the nursery mouth and let its full body clear before restoring the elevator.
The cost of failure
A collapsed crust traps equipment and forces retreat to an upper chain. Destroying the nursery triggers a persistent lethal defence rather than a scripted forgiving reset.
What remains
A redirected Vorrak keeps the lower trench inhabited. Killing it opens a faster mining route but removes a major grazer control and changes the later expedition return.
